What to Wear to a Hammam: A Simple Guide

One of the most common questions first-timers ask is simply: what do I wear to a hammam? The answer is easy once you know it, and it varies slightly between a traditional neighbourhood bath and a polished spa hammam. Here is a simple guide.

The short answer

You keep your underwear on. Full nudity is not the custom — modesty is respected everywhere. Most people wear a pair of underwear they do not mind getting wet, and that is all you need for the ritual.

Traditional (beldi) hammams

At a neighbourhood hammam, wear or bring a pair of old underwear or swimwear bottoms. Some people bring swimwear; underwear is perfectly normal. Bring flip-flops for the wet floors, a hair tie for long hair, and a towel and change of clothes for afterwards. You will usually buy or bring your own black soap and kessa mitt, and rent a bucket on site.

Spa hammams

At a spa or riad hammam, it is easier still. Disposable underwear is often provided, along with towels, robe, slippers and all the supplies. You simply arrive, change, and let the attendant guide you. If you prefer, you can wear your own underwear or swimwear.

What to bring

Beyond what you wear, pack flip-flops, a hair tie, a change of underwear and clothes, and a small amount of cash for a tip if an attendant performs your scrub. Remove jewellery before you go in.

A few tips

Do not wear anything you would be upset to see stained — black soap is dark. Avoid heavy makeup, which will come off. And do not over-plan the outfit: a hammam is a relaxed, welcoming place.
